Hello Reader, What would you do if you discovered that all your toil and labor striving toward the life you thought you wanted — and the career you thought you were building — no longer fit? Would you press on, thinking just one more push would get you to where you need to be? Might you try a slight pivot to see if that would reignite the fire? Or would you pull back, evaluate, and open yourself up to a new direction?
iTunes | Spotify | YouTube | SubstackIn this episode of the StableMinded Podcast, I continue sharing my journey through a three-month sabbatical and the unexpected clarity that emerged when I stopped striving, producing, and trying to keep everything moving. As my nervous system moved from survival to rest, reviving not only my creativity but also the ability to think more clearly, I was ready to seek God for direction for what was to come after sabbatical. The clarity came through redefining work into four distinct categories: hobby, job, career, and vocation. The distinction was challenging yet invited me to to look deeper, asking these questions: What am I drawn to spend my time doing? What do I feel like I have to do? What is life-draining? Life-giving? What is the value I placed on my work? Others? What is the measure of success? Failure? The more I wrestled with these questions, the more clarity I gained in some areas of my life while others felt very unclear — beckoning for more time to explore my motives and mindset before making any decision. Maybe that is where you find yourself today. Whether you feel stuck and weary or wondering with hope about what may come next, I hope that my story and the framework I followed for considering my calling in a new way will help you find the courage to redefine work and explore what your deeper calling may be as well. Hello Reader, If you were able to listen to the last episode of the StableMinded Podcast, I was brutally honest about what I experienced when I finally stopped pushing through. Those first few weeks of my sabbatical exposed more than I wanted to know as I discovered the damage of not slowing down. Hello Reader, Have you lost your creativity? That imagination and risk taking that is developmentally appropriate for children? I did . . . for art too long. But in this post-sabbatical season of leaning into the unforced rhythms of grace, I'm also unbridling creativity! I'm not only holding space for life of the artist within me to remerge, but I'm also telling the story in the “Life After Sabbatical” series I'm sharing on Substack. In part 2, I share how the words that should have never...
